What is KYT (Know Your Transaction)?
Watching how money actually moves, linked back to a verified customer.
Definition
KYT — Know Your Transaction — is the transaction-level companion to KYC. Where KYC verifies who a customer is, KYT monitors how money moves through their account (collections and payouts) and links that behaviour back to a verified identity and risk profile. In Kenya that mostly means watching M-Pesa, PesaLink and Airtel Money flows for suspicious activity.
In plain English
In plain English: KYC checks who your customer is; KYT checks what their money does afterwards — and flags anything that looks like fraud or laundering.
Why it matters
Identity checks tell you who someone is at onboarding; KYT tells you what they do afterwards. For fintechs, SACCOs and lenders, it is how you catch fraud and money-laundering typologies in the flow of real payments — not months later.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between KYC and KYT?
KYC verifies a customer’s identity, usually at onboarding. KYT monitors their transactions over time — how money comes in and goes out — and links that behaviour back to the verified identity. You need both.
How does KYT work in Kenya?
In Kenya most money moves over M-Pesa, PesaLink and Airtel Money, so KYT means monitoring collections and payouts on those rails against risk rules, and flagging suspicious patterns for review.
